The Stolen Bacillus and Other Incidents Overview

H. G. Wells’ First Book First published in 1895 just before his first novel, The Time Machine, The Stolen Bacillus and Other Incidents features H. G. Wells’ earliest science fiction stories. Ranging from a plot to wipe out London through biological terrorism to an unknown creature preying on scientists at a remote astronomical observatory, the stories selected for this new edition display the amazing imagination and plot twists that are characteristic of the author’s later works. Full of youthful exuberance, each of these tales provide for a greater appreciation for how Wells developed his craft. Several of the brief plots laid out in this collection were subsequently expanded by the author into larger works, while others could be the basis for other writers’ efforts, such as The Flowering of the Strange Orchid, which is essentially the same story as Little Shop of Horrors.

Great classic sci-fi - still fresh today - K. Sozaeva - Athens, GA USA
H G Wells wrote and published this book of short stories in 1895; the first book he published, if I remember correctly. The writing style is typical Wells - just like he was sitting in front of you telling you a tale - and the stories themselves are quite entertaining. The topics range from an Anarchist set to destroy London by stealing a vial of cholera bacilla (the title story) to a man describing his time on a deserted island and how he hatched out an egg that had been preserved for 400 years. I think my favorite was the taxidermist story, just because it was really twisted :-) Give this book a try - it's a great introduction to the writings of a classic author of truly tremendous standing.

Excellent collection of tales - Steven Wilber - Washington, DC USA
I really enjoyed this collection of 15 tales which range from a different way of looking at every day events, to high adventure (complete with buried treasure), mystery, magic, and science fiction. There is something for everyone in this collection.

These tales show imagination and all are beautifully written in Wells' classical style. One of H.G. Wells' biggest strengths is his ability to paint a picture with words. The reader is very much able to visualize what is going on, whithout being told every single detail.

A must read collection for fans of H.G. Wells and classic SciFi alike.

Personal favorites in this collection include "The Lord of the Dynamos", "Trough A Window", and "The Treasure in the Forest".

The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream Review

'The Alchemist', although written in a simple language, spoke to the core of my soul. I loved the simplicity of the writing, the way the elements were used to portray the struggles and searches of each and everyone's journey here on earth, and how Paulo incorporated spirituality. The innocence of the Sheppard searching, and journeying to find the Alchemist was/is inspiring! I related to the Sheppard in my life, and saw it as a parable for what we are all doing here. Searching for our purpose!
Isabella Gentilin - Author of 'Whispers of an Angel'

The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream Overview

Paulo Coelho's enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world, and this tenth anniversary edition, with a new introduction from the author, will only increase that following. This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and inspiring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasures found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts.

The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream Specifications

Like the one-time bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull, The Alchemist presents a simple fable, based on simple truths and places it in a highly unique situation. And though we may sniff a bestselling formula, it is certainly not a new one: even the ancient tribal storytellers knew that this is the most successful method of entertaining an audience while slipping in a lesson or two. Brazilian storyteller Paulo Coehlo introduces Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who one night dreams of a distant treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. And so he's off: leaving Spain to literally follow his dream.

Along the way he meets many spiritual messengers, who come in unassuming forms such as a camel driver and a well-read Englishman. In one of the Englishman's books, Santiago first learns about the alchemists--men who believed that if a metal were heated for many years, it would free itself of all its individual properties, and what was left would be the "Soul of the World." Of course he does eventually meet an alchemist, and the ensuing student-teacher relationship clarifies much of the boy's misguided agenda, while also emboldening him to stay true to his dreams. "My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy confides to the alchemist one night as they look up at a moonless night.

"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself," the alchemist replies. "And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity." --Gail Hudson

Wonderful service and a great product! - ImplosionsOfJello -
I ordered the book because it was a required reading assignment and due to the demand I couldn't get it anywhere else. I started to panic over whether it'd arrive with enough time for me to read it before school but instead it came several days earlier than the estimated delivery date and in better condition than was described, it looked absolutely brand new. I am very happy with the service I recieved as well as with the product. Thank you.

How many times have you read a book and when you are done, you go back and look for parts that you loved AND write them down AND repeat those parts to friends? This is that book. It's not long and it's not complicated. It's super easy to read and speaks to EVERYONE. The story talks about looking for clues the quest for enlightenment. Interestingly, I see this story as one of the clues.

This is a great book...I read it years ago and loaned it to lots of people. The last friend I loaned it to forgot to return it...perhaps they loaned it to someone else. It's that kind of book...you'll want everyone you know to read it. I know it's been said before about other books but this one really had a hugh inpact on me. I ordered two copies this time...one for me and one as a gift. This time I'll keep my copy and just buy new ones as gifts.

I'm only about half way through the book, but I'm enjoying it so far.
There are definitely elements of "Christian cheese" that make me roll my eyes (i.e. demons are camping out in the University - brainwashing young minds!) BUT I have really appreciated the reminder that there is a spiritual war going on out there. My prayer life has been strengthened and that makes the cheesy parts worth it.

Frank Peretti makes one believe in angels and demons. As you go through the book, you 'see' them fighting, and gets one to cheer for good. Makes you think about what you do in your life. Excellent read.

Great Price for

The Candy Shop War Review

I think that this book is great. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes books about kids that have superpowers and magic candy. The candy gives kids temporary superpowers. My favorite candy is the mirror mints. You have to read the book to find out what they do. One of my other favorites is a clean slate. I don't want to spoil the book so you have to read the book if you want to know what it does.

I think that the author chose a great title but the cover picture doesn't describe the story very well. Why in the world is there a giant peppermint on a stick on the cover? There aren't even any lollipops in the story! The bad thing about the book is that there are no pictures. The story is good, though. I would give it 12 out of 10 stars.

The Candy Shop War Overview

Welcome to the Sweet Tooth Ice Cream & Candy Shoppe, where the confections are a bit on the . . . unusual side. Rock candy that makes you weightless. Jawbreakers that make you unbreakable. Chocolate balls that make you a master of disguise.

Four young friends &dmash; Nate, Summer, Trevor, and Pigeon &dmash; meet the grandmotherly Mrs. White, owner of the Sweet Tooth, and soon learn about the magical side effects of her candies.

In addition, the ice cream truck driver, Mr. Stott, has arrived with a few enchanted sweets of his own. But what about the mysterious man in the dark overcoat and fedora hat? Why are all these "magicians" trying to recruit Nate and his friends? Who should they trust?

The mystery deepens and the danger unfolds as the four youngsters discover that the magical strangers have all come to town in search of a legendary, hidden treasure &dmash; one that could be used for great evil if it fell into the wrong hands. The kids, now in over their heads, must try to retrieve the treasure first. And so, the war begins . . .

wish it were real - Forever Strong -
i wish all the candy was real it is so cool i say read it.

The good and the bad - Ulyyf - NYC
This book is a lot of fun, it's exciting, it's not overly scary, and the ending is set up very nicely well in advance (although I must say I didn't see it coming). It's well-written, and if the ethical dilemmas the kids find themselves in aren't very novel, well, at least they make a clear moral message. (Remember, kids, robbing graves is wrong!)

So why only three stars? Well, because even though the writing would normally cause me to give this book four stars, I yanked a star off for the race issues.

Yes, it's gonna be one of those reviews. Deal with it.

There are a lot of, uh, issues in this book, and they're all woven in a messy little package of ick that really mars this otherwise great book.

Let's start with the demographics of the main characters. We've got four kids (and their families, but for the sake of convenience I'll count each family as one unit), three bullies, two magicians, and a mysterious guy whose job I can't divulge for spoiler reasons. And a teacher, and a janitor.

All these people are white and non-Hispanic, in a state where non-Hispanic whites actually make up less than 50% of the population. That's just unrealistic. I should be suspending my disbelief to deal with magic, not messed-up racial demographics.

And I *know* these people are right because of the OTHER big problem in this book: How non-whites are described.

Hoo-boy. The white people are described with a variety of adjectives - "honey-blond hair", "portly", "bleary-eyed in a stained corduroy jacket", "short, pudgy with thick black hair", "blond with curly hair", and on one memorable instant "plump, balding, with a goatee". (The last is not an exact quote.)

The non-whites (all minor characters, I can't think of any that persist for more than a page or two) are described... with their race. They're black, Asian, "Asian with sliver eyes" (wtf?), or Indian. Compare "a black female police officer" with "the police officer, a muscular man with short hair and chiseled cheekbones" and something starts to seem... wrong. It's like the author thinks that simply giving somebody's race is sufficient to describe them. Unless they're white, of course, because the hidden message here (although I'm sure it was unintentional) is that white people a. are normal and b. all look different from each other. The few times another adjective is used, it's something that's stereotypically of that race - a woman is Vietnamese, "small and slight". A crying kid is Asian and also "tiny".

Likewise, when the children change appearance, the book makes a point of mentioning that what changes (and the ONLY thing that changes) is their race. They look like them, but Asian or black or Hawaiian or "full-blooded Native American". The comments they make ("I kinda was hoping for black" or "Now would be a great time for a victory hula") smack of exoticism, and why? Because white people are normal.

I know, I know, he didn't mean anything by it! I'm sure he didn't. I'm sure the author is not really a bigot, and is probably quite a nice person who believes in equal rights for everybody, etc. etc. etc. This does not mean that the underlying message in these lopsided descriptions isn't there.

There's also the thing with the candystore wooden Indian, an "ancient chief" with feathers and buckskin and a tomahawk, who looks "weary but courageous". He also - SPOILER ALERT! - comes alive midway through the book and violently steals an important object. I'm actually gonna give this one a pass on the (admittedly dubious) grounds that the owner of the wooden Indian presumably got/carved it way way way back in the day when this sort of casual racism was widely considered to be okay, and anyway, by that point in the book we know she's evil.

I took away one star, and I suggest that you read this book before you buy it, especially if you plan to use it in a classroom. It's not really the lack of non-white characters (if that's your criteria, the unfortunate reality is you'll find yourself with very few books indeed that you can read with your kids, and most of the ones you have will be depressingly "uplifting" instead of fun), but more, as I said, how they're described. The cumulative effect of all this left me feeling exhausted, and I'm not sure I want to read this with my young nieces.

Now, the Warrior in Elijah is consumed with a different battle--winning Siena's heart by giving her pleasure beyond all boundaries. What starts as attraction and arousal soon burns into a passion with consequences that will echo through the ages for both their people. And as would-be enemies become inseparable lovers, another threat approaches, one with the power to destroy them all...

Siena is a strong stubborn women she is a little whinny at times, she is not willing to share her thrown, so she is a bit pushy at times. Please note that the text of this story, ELIJAH by Jacquelyn Frank, begins on page 7. The first six pages are the teaser copy, the Also By The Author page, the title page, the copyright page and the dedication.

Also on the inside front cover, it lists NOAH as available now. That title will be published in September, 2008.

Sorry for any confusion.

Elijah and Siena make a dynamic royal pair - K. Brown - Angleton, TX USA
In this third installment of the Nightwalker series, Jacquelyn Frank brings together two people who could not be more different. He is known as 'the Butcher' to the Lycanthrope race, and she is their reigning queen. When she comes across him, severely injured and dying, after being ambushed by villains, she rescues him, and takes him to a secluded cave to take care of him. Things progress quickly between them, regardless of Elijah's wish not to press her, and Siena's wish not to become involved with him. She reigns as a virgin queen, and the first time she gives herself to a man, he becomes her mate, and she wants to avoid this at all costs. She does not wish to have a dominant man sharing the throne with her, not after her father plunged her people into three hundred years of war. No matter their individual inner conflicts, the Imprinting occurs.

He leaves the cave and returns to the king's home. She refuses to acknowledge the Imprinting, maintaining that Lycanthropies are not bound by it. Elijah keeps his distance, knowing that Samhain will see them come together whether she wishes or not. Siena constantly fights her fear of being Imprinted, but also knowing that Elijah is her destined mate. I loved how Magdelegna and Gideon offer her the solution she needs. With rogue Demons, evil necromancers, and hunters revolving in the background, this is another winner for Jacquelyn Frank. Enjoy.

Successful hunt for passion! - A. McKinnon -
This is the third book in the "Nightwalkers" series- and a great addition. I think so far, this one is my favorite! This is very definitely a romance series, so it has to follow a formula, but it does so in a highly satisfying manner.

The romance was briefly set up in the last book "Gideon," and does not dissappoint. Both characters Siena and Elija are strong, both warriors, both leaders and nothing in sacrificed in terms of character in the name of love or story line. The strength of the characters is nicely set up for being the focus of their admiration for each other. Solid strong female lead and well balanced warrior male.

The overarching plot that spans the books is continued providing satisfying time for favorite characters from other books- Jacob & Bella most especially. There is just enough forward motion that you feel things are progressing without too much jarring to the romance. It's also nice to see the relationships continue to develop in prior couples.

Over all, I really enjoyed this book. Strong characters, strong images, solid plot continuations and tantalizing glimpses of where the next books might go. A new species is brought in and a clever connection found that might hint at later closeness between all the nightwalker species...

Frank continues to grow a great paranormal romance series with Elijah! - Erin K. Simons - Central Indiana
Once again, Jacquelyn Frank delivers a book that could reheat my tea without the benefit of a microwave. Whoo. Elijah is, in a word, steamy.

In this third installment in the Nightwalkers series, the lycanthropes take center stage through Siena, the race's leonine queen. When Siena saves Elijah, the Demon Warrior Chief, from an attack by necromancers, he is nearly dead. She nurses him back to health, and in the process, the two are unable to fight their powerful attraction to one another. Unfortunately, their budding love affair is a forbidden one -- by law, Nightwalker races simply do not mix. But Elijah realizes quickly that he and Siena are imprinted, and destined to be together despite the taboo.

Their relationship is complicated by politics and power grabs, but overall, it's a nice story. Frank does a beautiful job of advancing the overarching story of the series, and brings traitorous Ruth and her daughter Mary further into the open. Elijah is a perfect alpha male romantic lead, and the romantic interludes he shares with Siena are very erotic in a hot, primal sense. Let me put it to you this way: you may feel the need to put down the book and fan yourself before starting a new chapter.

Frank also teases the next series coupling of Syreena, hybrid lycanthrope sister of Siena, and Damien, the prince of the Vampires. I'm not jazzed about either of those characters from the initial chemistry, but I'm sure that Frank won't let me down. She hasn't failed me yet. So, while I'll miss my leading Demon men, I'm confident enough in Frank's storytelling to say, "Bring on the vamps!"

Mogworld Review

Mogworld Overview

In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about sixty years. When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all.
On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds: angry mobs of adventurers, a body falling apart at the seams and a team of programmers racing a deadline to hammer out the last few bugs in their AI.
Mogworld is the debut novel from video-game icon Yahtzee Croshaw (Zero Punctuation). Mogworld is a comic fantasy novel in the tradition of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, with a video-game twist: the main character is a minor character in a massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

I don't understand what everyone is talking about. This book is one of my favorite of the series. I love Cratus. He's the defintion of a hero. He was punished for saving the life a baby, yet he didn't doubt his choice. Its definitly a step up from Striker's story. I hated that one. I liked Delphine, especailly when I found out she was Leta's babe. All in all.... this book rocked!

Where do I begin? - Musette - Waterloo, IA
I can't really add much more than other reviewers already have. This book is chok full of too
many new characters, weak romance, and more pop culture references than Saturday morning TV. I haven't decided if SK is trying too hard or not hard enough, as this series is all over the place. I'm no longer in this for the romance (hot sex + "I love you's" =/= romance) and I can't say I'm disappointed because the writing has been on the wall since Dark Side of the Moon.

SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't read the series up to this book yet >>>>>

We have the son of Warcraft and Hate (how many "war gods" have we seen up to this point?).
The heoine, not particularly memorable. We have super-duper evil bad guys who've been around since the beginning of the universe. No, the REAL beginning, from The Source itself. Nice of SK to drop this little bit of info 17 books in, instead of giving a slight hint earlier.

We have gods and goddesses who are the most powerful in the universe - no wait, now we have some gods and goddesses who are the most powerful in the universe. NO WAIT, now we have even bigger and older gods and goddesses and god-killers who are the most powerful in the universe. OK wait...

We have "good" beings who can't die or the world will end paired up with "evil" beings who also can't die or the world will end. We have ancient prophecies that simply won't be de-railed (but they can be delayed almost indefinitely). A couple of things that stood out:

- Zarek's one-liners were a nice welcome. "Kill them all and let Hades figure it out." - I laughed for a good few minutes, even better that Hades was actually there to respond.

- Asmodeus was mildly entertaining. His personality was actually a bit different from the rest with his almost-cute rambling. Or maybe I just think that because no one else was remotely interesting (aside from Madoc). Hmm.

- Artemis and her words of wisdom about love. Say what? This is from the same person who tricked Ash into a blood bond, kept him for eleven thousand years for torture and abuse, and failed to tell him he had a daughter? SK is clearly trying to set her up as a sympathetic character worthy of a HEA. It ain't gonna work, at least not with me and I'm NOT the only one.

If I were the Source I'd just nuke everything and start over from scratch. The series is completely batty at this point in time.

Great Book! - Broken Angel - Los Angeles
This was a great book I am so good I bought it I loved it. I would definitely recommend it to any one who like the the Dark Hunter Series or anyone who like Paranormal Romance, as with all Sherrilyn Kenyon books speacially the Dark Hunter series.

Kenyon's books going downhill - Voracious Reader - Cincinnati, Ohio
I was in LOVE with the Dark Hunter series and raved to anyone who would listen - "Twilight who?" but then she began to slowly write so formulaic and just when you thought you could map the universe out she switched it on you and not in an enjoyable way. I used to own every book in the Dark Hunter series and after the introduction of Sin and the Gailu I decided "Forget this!" it doesn't make sense anymore. She is writing for money not her public. Then along came Stryker's story and PLEASE! i wanted to say STOP now you are embarrassing yourself. I have still checked in with the book storyline through the library and reading at Borders but Kenyon does not seem to be learning anything from her faithful public. Now she has started Nick's "Series" and it seems she is going to re-work things and milk it for all its worth. I loved Nick and was really hoping for a redeemable book in his story but i have a bad feeling it is just going to be one more thinly veiled marketing ploy for our money. It is too bad when your favorite writers go over to the "making money" side of the business and forget those of us who got them their place in popular fiction by cranking out books instead of inventing a better story.

haven't read - Brandy R. Mckinnon - Texas USA
sadly i haven't read this book and I thought sherrilyn kenyon couldn't write a bad book but two or three of them have just left me feeling sick inside like i wish i could just forget that i had ever read them.

No Mercy (Dark-Hunter) Review

No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Paranormal Romance -Sept 7th, 2010
4 stars

No Mercy is the newest novel by paranormal author, Sherrilyn Kenyon. Once again, Kenyon allows us into the world of the Dark Hunters, powerful warriors from the past who died horrific deaths, only to be brought back to life for revenge and the chance to rid the world of evil forever. This book focuses on Dev, a human who can shift into a bear and do some serious damage to his enemies. Sam, one of the few female Dark Hunters we hear about, is a fierce warrior who revels in battle. After meeting at the bar Dev's family owns, the two of them fall into an intense relationship that may or may not allow them to survive.

This book brings a ton of action, history, and bad-assness, all tied in with passion and love. The Demons and Daimons are back again, and Dev and Sam are some of their newest targets. The interesting part is finding out what powers Sam has and what torture she went through to receive them. And I'm glad that one of the brothers of the bear clan finally gets a book.

No Mercy is far along in the series, but you shouldn't have any problems understanding what's going on. Personally, I don't think you would enjoy it as much as if you had the full knowledge and appreciation of the characters from previous novels, but Sam's character is new, and everything is explained.

If you love Kenyon's Dark Hunter series, then you will not be disappointed. It has all the makings of a Dark Hunter novel, complete with lame jokes and brooding, hot men with long hair. I have read all her Dark Hunter novels, and I always love hearing about what the rest of the characters are up to. And although Kenyon's male characters are all very similar, it doesn't make them any less sexy or likeable. No Mercy is another great read from the author and once again, leaves me anxious to find out that gets the next story,

No Mercy (Dark-Hunter) Overview

Live fast, fight hard and if you have to die then take as many of your enemies with you as you can. That is the Amazon credo and it was one Samia lived and died by. Now in contemporary New Orleans, the immortal Amazon warrior is about to learn that there’s a worse evil coming to slaughter mankind than she’s ever faced before.

The war is on and Dev and Sam are guarding ground zero. But in order to win, they will have to break the most cardinal of all rules and pray it doesn’t unravel the universe as we know it.

Moderately Entertaining - Cassandra Johnston -
Sometimes it seems like there are four different people writing these books b/c they range from terrible to fantastic. I started out loving this book because the wit is there in full force--laugh out loud stuff. Dev has been one of my favorite characters since he first appeared so I was really excited about his book and I recommend reading it though it does not prove to be anything like the fast paced and filled out story telling we sometimes get from the DH series. There are lots of things left unexplained and the story gets wrapped up in a neat little epilogue that sort of left me flat. One thing I noticed and appreciated was that this book seemed to jump genres a bit from Paranormal Romance that started the series into Urban Fantasy--it's extremely PG-13. A good read, but left me on the fence about continuing the series.

Another great book!!! - NarkdNymph - England
From the beginning I've been in love with Kenyon's Dark, Were and Dream Hunters. Every story grips you from the beginning and the newest does not let you down. I've always prefered the clan from New Orleans and getting to know more about one of them is a blast...But as each new book comes out we get to learn more about the past of the whole group as well. As I hate to know to much about what happens in a book before I read it, I won't give anything away. I will say this however, get ready to lock yourself away and not talk to anyone until you are finished with this one, you won't want to put it down!!! Two thumbs way, way up Ms. Kenyon, thanks again for another great story!!!

Excellent Bridge Book - Sarah Free - Philly
What do you get when a Dog of War and an Arcadian Bear mate?

This book picks up right after Bad Moon Rising with Sanctuary getting back on its feet. This is one of those tie it together/stage for a big revelation books. The core of the story is about Samia and Dev and how do two people who are afraid of relationships and letting others become important manage to trust enough to fall in love. The course of the book ties up a few loose ends like what happened to Amaranda and Cael, as well as letting us get to know the Dogs of War. Thorne makes an appearance as the manipulative bastard we all love and hate. Stryker of course shows up and is an honorable villain. One annoying factor is knowing who and what Nick is while the characters in the story do not but all will be revealed in the end I imagine.

All in all its a fast paced story with lots of action, questions are answered while others are posed. There's the normal sarcastic wit we love in the hunters (Dark and Were alike) as well as the vulnerability they all carry and struggle with. It's a great story that seems to be helping to set up another amazing one like Acherons.

Every Which Way But Dead (The Hollows, Book 3) Review

This series has a full head of steam and it just isn't letting up. I'm a little late to the party in that there's a bunch left to read yet, but I'm officially addicted to the universe Kim Harrison has crafted.

As far as the plot is concerned. That's difficult to nail down. It's not that there's so much of a main plot as there's many plots and side stories going on all at once but each and every one is fun and promises interesting things to come. So rather than call it a 'plot', I find it more of 'a few days in the life of Rachael Morgan'

In the absence of Piscary's presence, there's a shifting of power in the Hollows' underworld. There's a new player in town and he wants to take over the territory. How does this lead to Rachael? Ivy, her friend and roommate is Piscary's scion. She doesn't want the power or the responsibility so Kisten is back, acting as Piscary's stand in. At this point anything involving Ivy involves Rachael so she's smack dab in the middle of it.

Trent Kalamack rears his manipulative head once again as he's also embroiled in the turmoil of Hollows criminal underworld. Once again, how does this involve Rachael? Who better to run security for Trent during his meet with the new power in town than one of the best runners Cincinnati has to offer?

In the midst of all those goings on, Big Al is (pardon the pun) hellbent on dragging Rachael down into the ever after with him.

And during the course of all of THAT, Rachael's love life is thrown a curve ball so she has her own personal issues to deal with. Rachael is a busy little witch to be sure.

Old faces return, some are absent and some new and interesting characters take their places. What I really enjoy about these books (and I've said it before) is even the 'normal' day to day things are fun to read. In fact, they're as fun to read as any of the major or minor plot lines. I also love the way Harrison handles adult themes. She can write sexy material without being blatantly sexual. She can write interesting love scenes with a purpose that aren't there just to shock a reader or keep them titillated or being blatantly pornographic. That's something a long standing series in the same genre could take a few pointers from. Of course I won't name any names ;)

Overall, Rachael is just a great character to read. I see some reviews and critique blurbs state that it's similar to the Anita Blake series, and in some ways it is. I guess it's unavoidable being an urban fantasy dealing with some of the same themes and iconic fantasy characters (weres, vamps, witches, etc). So I see some similarities while reading this but I honestly find that this is much more enjoyable in my opinion. It remains fun yet serious and Rachael is a flawed yet well meaning character who's strong, funny, sexy and vulnerable and through it all she remains completely LIKABLE. It's funny when a witch comes off more human than some human characters I've read over the years.

A++ on this book and the series as a whole!

Every Which Way But Dead (The Hollows, Book 3) Overview

There's no witch in Cincinnati tougher, sexier, or more screwed up than bounty hunter Rachel Morgan, who's already put her love life and soul in dire jeopardy through her determined efforts to bring criminal night creatures to justice.

Between "runs," she has her hands full fending off the attentions of her blood-drinking partner, keeping a deadly secret from her backup, and resisting a hot new vamp suitor.

Rachel must also take a stand in the war that's raging in the city's underworld, since she helped put away its former vampire kingpin—and made a deal with a powerful demon to do so that could cost her an eternity of pain, torment, and degradation.

And now her dark "master" is coming to collect his due.

Fun, but should be titled A Day In Rachel's Life - Blue Cat - California
I enjoyed the first two books in the series - they both have solid plot lines. In book 3 the plot seems to be a day in the Rachel's life: dumped by boyfriend, start relationship with new boyfriend, get a job, do the job, and express Rachel's feelings. There doesn't seem to be any goal to be achieved or mystery to be solved. Just a slow steady plodding through life's events. The character never takes charge, but is reactive to the world around her. A bit dull compared to the first two books in the series.

Every Wich Way But Dead by Kim Harrison - Sherrie Woods - Columbus, OH USA
This is such a fun series, Rachel Morgan is one sassy witch. I plan on reading the whole series. I am really enjoying taking time to myself, get a glass of ice tea and settle down with the book and get lost in the world of the Hollows. Thank you Kim Harrison!

I originally found this series on Kindle. I fell in love with it. It has the same feeling as the Sookie Stackhouse series. It's an easy read and very entertaining!

Mistborn : Final Empire Series (Book #1) (Mistborn, Book 1) Review

I heard about Brandon Sanderson a few years ago. The reviews were always praising, especially in terms of world-building and magic systems, and being the nerd that I am, those are pretty attractive to me in fantasy. However, when I started reading Elantris, I just couldn't get into it and gave up a hundred pages through. Then I bought Mistborn (or The Fnal Empire, depending on which edition you read) at JFK airport, and immediately loved it.

Reading Brandon Sanderson right now is a little like listening to Muse after the Twilight movies. Sure, he wasn't a nobody before, but he wasn't nearly as famous as he has become in the last two years either. And if you tell anyone you are reading his books now, they'll smirk and say you only do it because of his work on The Wheel of Time. But to me, it was the other way around. I was happy he was the one to finish Robert Jordan's magnum opus because I knew how good he is.

If I have to find a niche in the genre to put Brandon Sanderson in, that would be the same place occupied by David Gemmell (may he rest in peace), the one Raimond Feist vacated when he went the way of Salvatore and Brooks - the road of endless tired sequels, one every three months or so... It is the niche of high fantasy, of adventures and magic, and of characters that would be cardboard in the hands of a lesser author, but who in Sanderson's writing have just enough of that little spark that makes us care for them.

Mistborn is set in a setting that is rarely explored in fantasy. A long time ago, a great threat loomed over the lands, and a hero rose to defeat it. Many united under his banner, and he was the last hope of the world.

He failed.

It is now a thousand years later, and the land is covered by ash, spewed endlessly by active volcanoes. When darkness falls, unnatural mists envelop everything, and strange creatures lurk inside them. This is the time of the Final Empire, held in the iron fist of the Lord Ruler - an immortal god-like being that has controlled humanity for a whole millenium. Under his rule there are only two castes - the nobles, descendants of those that once helped the Lord Ruler ascend to power; and the skaa, slaves belonging to nobility, to do with as they please. Rebellions have been few and far between, and all of them end in total bloody suppression.

But now a new kind of rebel appears. One with the means and will to end the Final Empire once and for all, by striking at its heart - the Lord Ruler himself.

The story centers around the skaa rebellion in Luthadel, capital of the Empire. Even though it is a part of a trilogy, Mistborn is actually self-contained; the next installments in the series broaden the concept, revealing new layers to the world, previously hidden by the Lord Ruler's reign. And as a stand-alone book, it shines. It has everything a high fantasy needs: intrigues, lurking in the dark, amazingly cinematic fighting sequences... and magic.

Magic in this world is called Allomancy. An Allomancer is a person who ingests little slivers of metal and then "burns" them in his body, producing a specific effect. There are a number of metals, each working in opposing pairs: one gives you the ability to pull metals, another - to push them; one detects Allomancy, another hides it. This power is extremely rare, and only flows through the blood of some members of nobility, which is the reason for a law that states that any nobleman who takes a skaa lover has to kill her after, to avoid the power being given to the slaves. Of course, this doesn't always happen the way it should, and thus the unlikely cast of characters that shape the events of Mistborn. There are two kinds of Allomancers - those who could burn only one metal are called Mistings. There is, however, an extremely rare number of people, able to burn all metals - the Mistborn.

The magic system is so ordered and used with such precision throughout the book, it resembles more a Science Fiction concept than a Fantasy one. Sanderson obsesses over the interactions between different Allomantic talents, and the result is something that you could imagine so vividly, you almost begin to believe it possible. The action scenes involving Allomancy (that is, nearly all of them) are breathtaking, with people flying, Pulling and Pushing objects to amazing effects.

The story itself is a classic tale of insurrection from within, as the main character Vin - an orphan girl from the street with the powers of a Mistborn - is turned by the rebellion leader Kelsier - also a Mistborn - into a lady from the minor nobility, who he uses to infiltrate the world of the nobles for the purpose of sowing dissent and mistrust. The characters are more or less black and white, although enough nuances exist to make them come to life.

In the end, Mistborn is a greatly satisfying read. It lacks the grand scope of "Hard Fantasy" authors like Martin, Erikson or Bakker, but it does't need them either. Sanderson has written a thrilling adventure filled to the brim with action, intrigue and one of the most wonderfully developed magic systems I've encountered in the genre. I'd recommend it without reservations.

8/10

Mistborn : Final Empire Series (Book #1) (Mistborn, Book 1) Overview

Brandon Sanderson, fantasy's newest master tale spinner, author of the acclaimed debut Elantris, dares to turn a genre on its head by asking a simple question: What if the hero of prophecy fails? What kind of world results when the Dark Lord is in charge? The answer will be found in the Mistborn Trilogy, a saga of surprises and magical martial-arts action that begins in Mistborn.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison. Kelsier "snapped" and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark.

Kelsier recruited the underworld's elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot.
But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she's a half-Skaa orphan, but she's lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed.

Readers of Elantris thought they'd discovered someone special in Brandon Sanderson. Mistborn proves they were right.

A lot of book for the money - StephenC -
I really enjoyed this book. It was quite long, but didn't feel boring or overextended at all, instead using its length to explore a variety of different questions and issues raised by the plot. Overall, it was a very satisfying read, though the ending felt a bit abrupt. Overall, just a lot of book for your money.

Good read - Kethry86 -
I enjoyed reading this book and the others in the series. I liked the characters, the magic system and the story.

An OK read - Debra L. Martin - USA
I had high hopes for this book, but this book was much too easy to put down when I was busy [which I did often:] except for the last 150 pages. Then the pace picked up dramatically and I began to care what happened to the main characters. It's not a bad book, but not the best one I've read.

Great imagination, but well, the writing... - pk - sf ca
If you started a drinking game while reading the Mistborn Trilogy and had to take a shot every time a character awkwardly started a sentence with the two words "But..well..." or every time a character began their train of thought with the word "Interesting..." you'd die of alcohol poisoning before you'd read five chapters.

Other than that, these books are totally readable, were written by someone with a terrific imagination who does battle scenes almost as well as anyone in the business. If you don't mind that he also incorporates a fairly heavy dose of Mormon inspired religious overtones, especially towards the end of the series (something I didn't realize until the last book) then I'd recommend reading them.

Ghost Night (Bone Island Trilogy) Review

On Haunt Island near Bimini, writer Vanessa Loren is part of a crew filming a low-budget horror movie. As they complete the final wrap, someone gruesomely murders two actors Georgia Dare and Travis Glenn. Their heads are decapitated and posed in a frightening manner in the sand. The case is unsolved. For the next two years, Vanessa remains frightened and unable to sleep as she suffers nightmares from the grisly scene she saw on the Bahamas' island beach.

Filmmaker Sean O'Hara hires Vanessa to work on a documentary he is filming in the area where the cold case homicides that haunt her occurred. Hoping to get closure, she agrees. Sean can see ghosts and Vanessa fall in love, but a deranged killer stalks them anxiously waiting for a rerun of what happened two years ago.

The second Bone Island paranormal romantic suspense (see Ghost Shadow) is a delightful thriller due to the ghosts feeling genuine. The lead couple is a wonderful duet whose hope for a Hollywood ending is in trouble from a slasher (everyone knows what happens in a slasher flick). Ghost Night is tense entertainment as a killer looks forward to adding a pair in love to the count of victims.

Immortality Review

Immortality is a finely crafted mix of science fiction, science fact, and science mystery. Its surprising plots turns keep the reader gripped to the ingenious conclusion. Readers will also find it highly relevant to today's issues of ecological catastrophe and nanotechnology.

Immortality Overview

"Speaking as an evolved Transhuman, I applaud this very entertaining, intelligent, and thought provoking journey to the edges of humanity."
Danny Rubin, author and screenwriter of Groundhog Day.

"Immortality is a fine, tense, scientific mystery adventure that puts mankind in a challenge of survival with a short time limit. This is the way the world could end."
Piers Anthony, author of 21 New York Times best-selling novels.

Immortality has been a bestselling techno-thriller on the Amazon Kindle since January 2008!

Sci-Fi Reader - 4Stars - "This book manages to do what all the best sci-fi does - provide a thought-provoking, alternative viewpoint on the business of existence. I recommend you give it a go." - sfreader.com

Kirkus - There is enough power in the premise to leave readers reeling. A novel that will surprise fans of science-fiction and doomsday scenarios... An eschatological techno-thriller that explores human evolution, technology and the threat of global environmental collapse. An illicit bulldozer operator begins hearing terrible noises from the depths of the Brazilian rainforest. It's too late for the operator and something terrible is in the air. Birds begin to fall from the sky, and before he find shelter, he slides into a deadly paralysis. Traversing the globe, the narrative picks up ten months later in a Wyoming mountain range. Nobel laureate Mark Freedman is leading an expedition to study bacteria with a group of graduate students. Unaware of the incident in Brazil, or the other "kill zones" manifesting around the world, his knowledge of a particular bacterial strain will become indispensable in the following months as humanity struggles to survive. In Atlanta, Dr. Kathy Morrison humbly prepares for a blind date, but in a few weeks she will be looking for the causes behind another demi-apocalypse - this time on American soil. What follows isn't simply a rehashed viral saga in a level-four biohazard suit. It's a story about genetic revelation, environmental destiny and humanity's ecological responsibility. The science of the novel feels just on the side of authentic, and the expertly rendered sterilization procedures that Morrison must endure are as creepy and cool as anything on film or in print. But the novel's quasi-metaphysical implications make it more technically fantastic than hardcore science fiction. Bohacz takes great care establishing each character with personal details that serve the narrative well. Additionally, the science and science fiction are fascinating. There is enough power in the premise to leave readers reeling. A novel that will surprise fans of science-fiction and doomsday scenarios. - Kirkus Discoveries

Dust cover: Without warning, something has gone terribly awry. In the remote and unnoticed places of the world, small pockets of death begin occurring. As the initially isolated extinctions spread, the world's eyes focus on this unimaginable horror and chaos. Out of the ecological imbalance, something new and extraordinary is evolving and surviving to fill the voids left by these extinctions. Evolution is operating in ways no one could have expected and environmental damage may be the catalyst. Once discovered, this knowledge changes everything.

The story begun in Immortality is not over. A sequel is coming soon...

Truly awful book - D. Axelson - Virginia
I cannot understand the positive reviews given this book. It is difficult to call it a novel, as it contains little in the way of plot or character development. There's no reason to care about any of the characters. The writing itself is bad. The book may be selling well on Amazon, but that's obviously the result of a low price and really deceptive reviews.

Really? I usually let typos go however, when there are so many that they distract from the story, well...

loved the story , different and interesting. read in 2 sittings... but the whole premiss was very sad to think about..

Derivative but well written until it fizzles out - JennyP -
Robin Cook, Michael Crichton, Stephen Baxter & Greg Bear all come to mind with a peppering of Stargate as influences on the author.

The story starts as a medical thriller & then suddenly changes into science fiction ala the crazy genre change in the film From Dusk Til Dawn. The book explores an interesting concept and is well written enough to make it compulsive reading right up until the end. Unfortunately the author doesn't know where to take the story, the science doesn't stand up to much scrutiny and it devolves into silliness before abruptly wrapping up.

Worth a read but don't expect logical satisfaction.

Batman: Arkham Asylum (15th Anniversary Edition) Review

My favorite part of this whole graphic novel would have to be the art. The art is definitely unlike anything I've seen in comics before, and I've only seen the style here and there in artistic media. The Arkham backstory was interesting, but did get a little confusing at times when Arkham's dialogue was on panels of Batman running through Arkham. Although I really enjoyed the art it does lend itself to having to focus on the panels for a bit longer to fully absorb the action being depicted. The story is fairly simplistic and you can either take it at face value or dig deeper into it. Overall this graphic novel is an interesting Batman novel, but from what I can tell it's not a full on Batman story as it delves deeper into the mythos of Arkham Asylum and its insane inmates. Still an interesting read none the less. I recommend this as a buy, or if you have a friend that has it barrow theirs.

Difficult to read, but a worthy addition to your collection. - TravMac -
It's definitely one of the hardest books I've ever had to read. But more than likely intentionally, it manages to put you into the maddening frame of mind Batman must've been going through while at Arkham.
I liked it, didn't love it though. I'll keep it and try to read it again another day to see if I missed anything worth putting it on my top ten list.

Excellent Product & Customer Service! - Ann M. Stanley -

I ordered a book from this seller; his listing said it was "used" but in great condition. Let me tell you, it was in EXCELLENT condition - I would have thought it was brand new! Great product and understated honesty - that's what makes a great seller. Thank You!

Too short, didn't like the art - Michael Talarski - Glastonbury, CT
I sadly don't have much to add besides the fact that I wanted more of the story and that the art hurt me. It wasn't bad I just didn't like the style at all.

You do end up buying a lot of bonus scripts and concept pages so yeah.

Succubus Blues Review

This book was somewhat of a surprise. I bought it on a whim at the grocery store of all places because I was bored. I read a lot and love sci-fi/fantasy and figured it couldn't be that bad so I bought it.

The story is about a Succubus who has doubts about who she is. Not an altogether unhead of story. Those who watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer will remember her love was a Vampire with a soul and one who wanted to do good and fight evil. The way in which the author plays out the story though is unique and refreshing. The fact that the main character is a female has a lot to do with that.

I won't give any spoilers here the book is worth reading for any who like sci-fi/fantasy. I am going to read the rest of the series to see how things turn out. I am interested to see how kind the aurthor is to the plight of her main character.

Enjoy the book.

Succubus Blues Overview

Succubus (n.) An alluring, shape-shifting demon who seduces and pleasures mortal men. Pathetic (adj.) A succubus with great shoes and no social life. See: Georgina Kincaid.

When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical?

But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic. Her boss is a middle-management demon with a thing for John Cusack movies. Her immortal best friends haven't stopped teasing her about the time she shape-shifted into the Demon Goddess getup complete with whip and wings. And she can't have a decent date without sucking away part of the guy's life. At least there's her day job at a local bookstore--free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can't.

But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle's demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won't help because Georgina's about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny...

"What an incredible debut novel! Succubus Blues is exciting, witty, sexy, intriguing and had me captivated from the first page." --Cheyenne McCray, author of Seduced by Magic

Good Writing But Very Unrealistic Outcome - Gerald S. Bull - Falls Church, Va United States
Shy Introverted males are not attractive to females in real life, and especially not in fiction. Mead spends the whole book showing what an incompetent introverted socail "loser" Seth is, with little redeaming qualities other than he is a good writer and does have some compassion. After a whole book of seeing mostly flaws in Seth, along with "God-like" qualities in Roman, we are asked to believe that Seth is the winner of the feisty, brainy, beautiful Georgina, who could have any man. This huge flaw totally takes away from otherwise very good writing, and I was sorry to buy the sequel before I found out Seth and Georgie would become a couple....big let down.

Loved it! - Joseph Towner - Pueblo, CO
This book was excellent. From the very beginning, I could not set it down. If you want a perfect read, this is the book for you.

OK - MadamD -
I was expecting a bit more. This book was recommended on a forum and I thought I would check it out. I was intrigued by the succubus story line. I thought it was okay I wasn't dying to read the next book after I finished this one. It is however an easy read and an entertaining story line,it just wasn't the greatest.

The Turning: Blood Ties Bk. 1 (MIRA) Review

Although they represented my number one childhood night time fear I've kind of been on a Vampire thing lately. I'd watched movies and TV shows, but had yet to read a book that strongly features vamps as main characters. So when (much to my surprise) I actually enjoyed "Queene of Light" by Jennifer Armintrout I decided to give her camp series a try.

Blood Ties is a four part series about Dr. Carrie Ames a recently credentialed emergency room doctor in Grand Rapids Michigan. One night a particularly terrible looking assault victim came into the ER-and Carrie-who hates failure-froze up. The patient (John Doe) died and being the take charge type Carrie decided to confront his body in the morgue and get over it.

Only he wasn't dead. And he attacked her. And turned her into a vampire.

Carrie doesn't know what is happening at first-but after that long recuperation period the attack mandated, she starts to discover odd things. Like sun light hurts. No amount of food or cigarettes will stop a craving. And she's taking an unhealthy interest in her patient's blood.

This being the 21st century naturally Carrie looks for answers on the internet. And discovers Nathan Grant a new age bookstore owner and vampire who informs her that yes, there are indeed vampires, she is one of them and if she doesn't join an organization dedicated to whipping them off the face of the earth (formed by the good vampires) he will kill her, as he tried to kill John Doe. Nothing personal.

Carrie also learns that John Doe -the vamp who turned her-is one of the more evil vampires on the planet. And she had a physic tie to him because of his blood in her veins meaning he can influence her in all sorts of weird ways.

"The Turning" is ninety percent Carrie waffling around about weather or not she really likes/loves Cyrus (her very twisted sadistic sire) or it's just the blood tie or does she love Nathan? And which way will she go-to the good side or the bad side?

Parts of this book are really entertaining but Carrie's endless whining and indecisions interspaced with moments of determined conviction (which often vanishes with the wind) get old really fast. Fortunately this is a very fast read so there wasn't really time for me to tire of it. Had the book been longer though...it would have gotten more than annoying.

Four stars.

The Turning: Blood Ties Bk. 1 (MIRA) Overview

I'm no coward. I want to make that perfectly clear. But after my life turned into a horror movie, I take fear a lot more seriously now. I finally became Dr. Carrie Ames just eight months ago. Then I was attacked in the hospital morgue by a vampire. Just my luck.

So now I'm a vampire, and it turns out I have a blood tie to the monster who sired me. The tie works like an invisible leash and I'm bound to him no matter what I do. And of course he's one of the most evil vampires on earth. With my sire hell-bent on turning me into a soulless killer and his sworn enemy set to exterminate me, things couldn't get much worse -- except I'm attracted to them both.

Drinking blood, living as an immortal demon and being a pawn between two warring vampire factions isn't exactly how I'd imagined my future. But as my father used to say, the only way to conquer fear is to face it. So that's what I'll do. Fangs bared.

Also couldn't finish it - SallyS - Ohio
I agree with the reviewers who stopped reading part way through and I am disappointed that I spent my money on a kindle edition which I don't even want to keep. I loved the opening chapters and thought the writing interesting, original and literary enough to get me involved. Then it was as though the book switched authors half way through. The characters were poorly drawn, inconsistant; the lead character became confusing and unlikable. It became a throw away read, as though the author had a brain transplant, gave up on her original idea and turned the book into every other bad teen vampire story.

A fun read - Angie - Boulder, CO USA
I read this to take a break from some other books whose text is really tiny, because they have been contributing to my headaches. I found this really engaging and overall enjoyable.

As far as sex and violence, there is a lot in common with the Sookie Stackhouse books. But I have to say it's really refreshing to get to read a book about a new vampire, instead of yet another romance between a male vampire and a mortal female. The character was fairly strong, which I appreciate. She did wind up in one or two situations from which she had to be rescued, but in the end she wound up having to do the heroics, so I appreciate that she wasn't just some feisty damsel in distress.

I have to say, the vampires in these books may be the most polarized I've ever seen. On one end, you have these completely sadistic, evil, irredeemable monsters who delight in rape, torture, and murder. On the other, you have the vampires who believe they should all be wiped out as a species. Fans of White Wolf games will understand what I mean when I say that this setting really needs an Anarch Movement!

Interesting Premise, Sloppy Execution - Chelsea Marie Spencer -
This book caught my attention when it was recommended as similar to Patricia Briggs and Laurel K. Hamilton. It doesn't really live up to those standards, and I ended up giving up on it about 200 pages in.

The premise is that a Carrie, a newly trained doctor, is attacked in the morgue by a vampire and subsequently turns into one. She is then caught up in a war between two very different vampire men. One, Nathan, is a member of an elite league of vampires dedicated to the extinction of their own kind. The other, the vampire who turned Carrie, a blood thirsty and uncaring yet captivating monster. Nathan tells her that in order to remain alive, under the orders of his organization, she must join forces with them and follow their rules. Meanwhile, her sire tries to seduce her, desiring her as a companion.

First of all, I'd like to say in this books favor that it is very gritty and suspenseful. Much happens in a very short amount of time. I can sort of understand the comparison to the Anita Blake and Mercy Thompson books. The first person narrative, a tough loner type heroine, and a considerable amount of gore. The side characters were probably the best part--I liked Nathan and his foster son, Ziggy. I also thought that Cyrus was one of the better villains I've encountered in books such as this.

The problems are numerous. Carrie is pretty hard to relate to and even harder to like. I got the sense that I might warm up to her depending on how the story progressed, but I never fully did. She's cold, lacks empathy, never demonstrates much competence in her career or life in general, and makes some very bad choices throughout the book. It's not that she's poorly written--just unlikeable. Most of the minor premises are pretty shaky. The plot with the self exterminating vampires had some potential but it came of as a bit stupid and unfounded. Then there's Cyrus' underling and her destructive tendencies which struck me as childish, pointless, and wholly unnecessary. All of this distracted from the otherwise decent central plot--that being lonely human woman tries to cope with vampirehood--so much that I lost interest.

I feel that this is the sort of book that you will either like or hate, and it's entirely dependent on your feelings toward the lead character. I for one am sick of independent to the point of stubborn to the point of stupid heroines who constantly need to be rescued from the messes they create. Especially when those heroines have few other qualities to redeem them. I wouldn't recommend this book.
